An Attack On Culture ~ Trashing A Book Market

“Security forces destroyed the kiosks…, causing damage to priceless collections of books…”

“Those were bookshops which housed a wealth of culture.”

“…despite holding a permit for the past 34 years, it was destroyed by the Ministry of Interior.”

“You have destroyed the livelihood of simple vendors and prevented poor people from reading and their pursuit of happiness. Is there anything more stupid than this?”

“Does this mean that selling books will now be like selling drugs and we will go buy books inside video tapes?”

>> Not sure what else I can do with this story, apart from the quotes above and a link to the original—Egypt: Security Forces Destroy Alexandria’s Historic Book Market………

How do you feel about this??

If you live in a “relatively” “democratic” country, you may want to ignore stories like this“It ain’t happenin’ here.”“What the hell can I do about it?”“It’s probably not as bad as they’re making it out to be…”

These are public stalls of used books

Books

A story in an Egyptian newspaper said, “…all the kiosks actually have licences.”

“Major General Khaled Gharaba, assistant interior minister for Alexandria security…” said “…he was merely following orders as he had received eviction decisions from the governorate for some of the kiosks due to their lack of licenses. He added that only 15 kiosks and some floor stands were removed while the rest were left alone.”

Only 15 destroyed

What if this happened in your town?

What can one do?

Why is something like this happening?

If anyone reading this is thinking “At least nobody died” I hope they realize that this is one of those actions governments take as a build-up to people dying—plus, many have and are dying in Egypt

But, Books??

Aha!  Dangerous Ideas!

Insane
