Kids, Libraries, Reading, Writing, & Illustrating

Do you remember your first visit to a library?

Did you read a lot as a child? Did you start writing early?

If you wrote as a child, did you also illustrate your work?

There are 19 other posts on this blog about libraries but not with the focus on youth this one has.

Scholastic helps the American Library Association give an award for “unusual contribution to the stimulation and guidance of reading by children and young people”.

This year, Southeastern Louisiana University staff  librarian, Paul Kelsey, won the award.

Even though all those institutions are in the United States, I found pleasure in the fact that the website that got Paul his award gets “an average 20 to 40 submissions a month from all over the nation and at least six other countries.”

If you know creative kids between the ages of 6 and 14 or even if you’re just a kid at heart do visit Launch Pad: Where Young Authors and Illustrators Take Off!

From their About Page: “Written works accepted for publication are assigned to young artists to illustrate, resulting in highly unique and creative publications. Launch Pad welcomes submissions of original stories, poems, and book reviews that have not previously been published. Young artists are encouraged to submit samples of artwork to be considered as illustrators.”

Another aspect of the site I love is the provision for Reader Comments—just wonderful  for a young writer or artist to get feedback :-)
