“Why Read Literature in the Digital Age?”

I usually lead readers to other sites—feature something from elsewhere and give links.

I’ll do that today but I’ll leave out my comments on what I’m leading you toward

It’s not that I can’t make comments—it’s that where I want you to go speaks so well on its own.

The Globe and Mail has an article titled, Books aren’t going anywhere – despite the threat of robot sonneteers, about the book, The Edge of the Precipice: Why Read Literature in the Digital Age?

Three excerpts:

The Edge of the Precipicebrings together a thoughtful group of writers, editors, philosophers, librarians, archivists, and literary critics from Canada, the US, France, England, South Africa, and Australia to contemplate the state of literature in the twenty-first century.”

“The next time you feel yourself giving in to the sometimes overwhelming urge to panic about the fate of literature in the digital age, follow this simple remedy: remember that you dream. For that is ironclad proof, on par with the Turing Test, that literature – that narrative art in whatever form – will never die.”

“Humans, strange creatures that we are, make sense of our lives by telling stories. In the space between each day and the next, we refresh our minds by concocting the most fantastic and elaborate fictions. We spend roughly a third of our lives thus, re-arranging our scattered experiences into stories.”
