Can A Blog Be Considered “Social Media”?

Is there a word for people who engage in activities that only gained popularity since they became adults?

If you know of one or want to coin a new one, do let me know

I came to the topic for this blog post by noticing the current average of comments here—about 8 per post—and contemplating something I wrote on the About Page (the most visited page on most blogs)—“I feel the real value of this blog is in conversations in the comments

Apparently, in the 17 months of blogging I’ve done here, this blog hasn’t, yet, attained it’s proposed “real value”—according to me only, since it may have attained value for others for different reasons

Certainly, a blog can’t be social media unless something “social” is happening on it.

Certainly, this blog has a steady trickle of sociability.

Perhaps contemplation of a timeline for blogging and a timeline for social media could reveal their common roots and potential for giving rise to each other—but, is a blog, per se, social media (even if only in a potential form)?

I recently created a new blog—somewhat a “sister” to this one—because of an activity I moderate on Book Island in the virtual world Second Life.

That blog, Global Peace Chat, may out-perform this one as social media since it’s birth is from a successful, on-going social endeavor

I suppose I could take the focus wide and ask if showing people what one writes and providing for feedback is a form of social media

Then, I could ask the question, Blogging ~ Can It Really Fulfill The Writer’s Dictum: “Write Every Day!”? (which has some creative punctuation at its end), but I don’t feel like breaking Blogging Rule #1,209, 975—“Try hard not to include too many topics in one blog post unless you’re working hard at stimulating an atmosphere of social media by provoking comments

Hmm. Hmm. Thinking. Thinking. Thinking. I don’t know. A word I mean. One should be invented.

Personally, I enjoy the social aspect of blogging. ‘Tho I have been reading advice from the experts who say if a blog is not receiving at least 5,000 hits a week, the blog should be shut down. I don’t recall a set number of comments a post should receive. I’d guess a good 40 would be expected.

I’ll head over to your new blog now!

For the new word, if there isn’t yet one, I came up with neotenirs. The neo is obvious. Tenere appears to be a medivial Latin word meaning “to hold, to keep, to comprehend,” and I assume the French and Spanish verbs tenir derives from it. The adult part in your request is missing. I really wanted German for that one, but it looks like that would be erwachsener.

Either way, throwing around neotenirs tomorrow morning at coffee hour will give me joy beyond belief.

Well, Simone, I thought you had them on your staff

Thanks, though, for having a conversation long enough to reach the nesting limits of this blog :-)
