This site is great. I tried it with several of my favourite books. One can think of lots of uses – in class, in reading groups, for selecting a present … I have come across one or two similar sites but they weren’t so good. The connection to amazon is useful, of course. And it is this connection that makes me wonder – am I nothing more than a customer?
Fascinating, Martina—”…am I nothing more than a customer?”
Perhaps balancing a site like this with Goodreads? :-)
Of course, they have purchase links, too…
I can’t wait until I compile a list and see what happens!
Very Cool, Barb :-)
Intuition and four-star reviews at Amazon. That’s how I find new books to read. I actually trust four-star reviews a lot more than five-star ones.
I tried the site, and the recommendations are rather intriguing. Will probably use it often.
Can you elucidate your reasoning on four-star reviews?
I tried Lindsay Buroker, one of my favourite authors, and it gave me a list of authors who I know I don’t like that much or even actively dislike. Debora Geary: not on enough people’s lists to give any recommendations. Rachel Aaron: some more pulpy writers not nearly as good as she is, and a few recommendations of books I’ve already read. So for me, not very useful.
Mike,
Thanks for your comment.
I was pretty sure the usefulness of that site depended heavily on the type of book entered…
So, the “score” so far is 2 – useful — 1 – not useful — 1 – yet to be seen :-)
I would agree to Start Your Novel’s reasoning on four star reviews in so far as it relates to over enthusiastic reviews. I tend to ignore reviews of books (a tendency, not a rule) but use them when looking for electronic stuff. Five star reviews often have a ring of a child enjoying the first five minutes with a new toy :-)
“…a child enjoying the first five minutes with a new toy…”
Well-put :-)
